SHOULD CHRISTIANS TITHE? Harry Bethel Often I hear or read where Christians ask the question "Should I tithe?" Many teach that we should give back to God ten percent of our earnings. But that is Old Covenant teaching. Christians living under a new and better covenant do not own anything including the money we earn. We are merely stewards or managers of the things entrusted to us by the Lord. There may be times when Jesus would lead you to give all of your money to someone else. His Holy Spirit may prompt you to become a disciple by giving up everything that you have. (See Luke 14:33.) The sons of God are led by the Spirit of God. We need to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit to give to others when He wants us to. Sometimes it will be none of our earnings for that pay period. Sometimes it will be a small portion, sometimes most or all of it. The early Christians were led by the Spirit to sell their goods and possessions, lands and houses, and take the money and lay it at the apostles' feet, and the apostles distributed it to other Christians (Acts 2:45; 4:34-37). How many Christians do you know today who have done that? Many are quite content to give only ten percent (or much less) and put what they don't spend into savings. Following are some verses of Scripture from the New Testament that will tell you all you need to know about the question, "Should Christians Tithe?" If you will read them and apply these truths to your life, you will be blessed beyond measure: The deceitfulness of riches choke the Word (Mt. 13:22). Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content (1 Tim. 6:7-8). Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth...but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven (Mt. 6:19-20a). Fear not, little flock....Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not...For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Lk. 12:32-34). Be kindly affectioned one to another in brotherly love...distributing to the necessity of saints (Rm. 12:10-13). Whoso hath this world's goods, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? (1 Jn. 3:17). To do good and to communicate [share] forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased (Heb. 13:16). Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands that thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth (Eph. 4:28). Labouring ye ought to support the weak...It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Ye cannot serve God and mammon [money] (Mt. 6:24). Woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation (Lk. 6:24). How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God (Lk. 18:24-25). They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition (1 Tim. 6:9). The love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows (1 Tim. 6:10). Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: but the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away (Jm. 1:9-10). Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (Jm. 4:3). Ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days (Jm. 5:1-3). Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again (Lk. 6:38). He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:6-7). Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy from me [Jesus] gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be [spiritually] rich (Rev. 3:17-18). |
