OCCUPATIONS SUITABLE FOR CHRISTIANS NOTICE: If you have not met the three conditions to become a disciple of Jesus according to Luke 14, including verse 33 literally, even though you have been born again, the truths set forth below will probably be absurd and untenable to you. This article deals with jobs, trades, occupations, professions and businesses that are suitable and unsuitable for Christians. Some of the unsuitable ones will be obvious and some not so obvious to worldly Christians in these last days of apostasy. God will not lead a Christian into any type of employment that is dishonoring to Him. Many Christians have not given a second thought concerning whether or not their employment is pleasing to God. Oftentimes, for today's Christians the determining factor for any particular employment is the amount of money and "benefits" received. All of the following various types of employment are based on biblical principles or clear commands of the New Testament, some Old Testament precedents, and within the context of a last-days apostatizing Christendom. The Christian reader should be reminded of 10 biblical truths that are directly or indirectly related to earning a living, notwithstanding the fact that they are ignored by most Christians today: First, and perhaps the most important is, "You cannot serve both God and money" (Mt. 6:24). Second, "The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (1 Tim. 6:10). Third, "The deceitfulness of riches chokes the Word" (Mt. 13:22). Fourth, "Godliness with contentment is great gain...But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that" (1 Tim. 6:6-8). Fifth, people "who have been robbed of the truth...think that godliness is a means to financial gain" (1 Tim. 6:5). Sixth, "The borrower is slave to the lender" (Prov. 22:7). Seventh, "Owe no man anything but to love one another" (Rom. 13:8). Eighth, one "must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need" (Eph. 4:28). Ninth, "Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things" (Col. 3:2). Tenth, "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction" (1 Tim. 6:9). Taking into consideration the above biblical commands, warnings and other scriptural principles many jobs can be eliminated if the following conditions exist: Worldly music (and much of the so-called "Christian" contemporary music) being played in the workplace. Television or radio played in the workplace. bartender military service (including non-combatant service) police work or guard duty in which one would be armed or might have to use physical force against another person retail stores wholesale stores any merchandizing of goods with prices marked up and re-sold any multi-level marketing such as Amway, etc. any sales job that entails selling a product or service produced by a company other than the company for which one works real estate sales or brokerage that facilitates borrowing money to finance real estate any business in which buyers are assisted in any way or given suggestions or advice in obtaining financing or borrowing money to make purchases banking finance companies mortgage companies or brokers credit card companies stock brokers financial investment advisors insurance companies gambling casinos, lotteries, etc. lawyers accountants martial arts, including judo, karate, etc. "Christian" bookstores secular bookstores grocery stores any retail store or wholesale store in which products sold are manufactured by some other entity day care center for children beauty salons para-church organizations pawn shops video stores massage and tanning parlors Bible colleges seminaries secular colleges and universities entertainment-oriented companies (drama, acting, movies for entertainment, bands, television production, video games, etc.) professional sports psychiatrists or psychologists (including "Christian" psychiatrists and psychologists) Note: A partnership with a non-Christian is an unequal yoke and not God's will. Working for a company that is owned or operated by non-Christians providing products or services that are not dishonoring to God is not an unequal yoke. Some jobs or self-employment that would be suitable for qualified Christians are: farmer (livestock and crops) carpenter painter remodeling houses plumber electrician drywall installer/finisher heating and air conditioning services builder/contractor barber janitorial services other suitable construction trades or jobs manufacturing of products such as furniture, tools, appropriate equipment, storage sheds, clothing, etc. food processing house cleaning lawn and garden maintenance landscaper nursery/greenhouse Contrary to what many Christians are doing in these last days of apostasy, any employment or self-employment that would require buying insurance, bonding, or financing or mortgaging would automatically be unsuitable for a Christian. If this article seems preposterous it is only because you are not a true disciple of Jesus, even though you may have been born again. The vast majority of Christians today are caught up in the world system and the world's way of doing things, including how to earn a living. |
